An end to the death penalty
Robert Fry of Farmington and Timothy Allen of Bloomfield will remain the last two inmates on New Mexico's death row after a Santa Fe jury spared the life of Michael Astorga on Friday and instead sentenced him to life in prison for the murder of Deputy James McGrane during a 2006 traffic stop. The New Mexico Legislature repealed the death penalty in 2009, and then-Gov. Bill Richardson earned an audience with the pope by signing the bill into law. New Mexico has had only one execution since 1960.

Their View: Big banks doing business on Fantasy Island
Let's visit a businessman's Fantasy Island.

Their View: We were better off when bankers were boring
"As a group," the economist Robert Lekachman wrote in 1976, "economists are slightly more entertaining than bankers and a trifle duller than lawyers.
Their View: Performance addresses stigma of mental illness
"We care about the mentally ill in this community," said Brenda Viloria, director of nursing at Sierra Vista Hospital in Truth or Consequences, when I was talking to her about working as a psychiatric nurse. Viloria went on to say "We have many mentally ill people who stop here. They say they like the name of the town." The people of Truth or Consequences proved this when they recently supported "Minds Interrupted," a live performance of storytelling by someone affected by mental illness. I saw this performance — and I was moved to tears.

Sound Off! (May 20)
You endorsed Steinborn and in your editorial you state that Antonio Lujan rarely takes the leadership role. If he does not take a leadership role, why is he on the House Appropriations Committee? I think he would be more of an asset to southern New Mexico than Steinborn.

Their View: Another dangerous game of chicken on national debt
It's not often that a senior political figure announces an intention to behave irresponsibly and risk inflicting great harm on the U.S. economy. It's even rarer that the politician, having already behaved irresponsibly and inflicted harm on the U.S. economy, announces his intention to do so again.

Sound Off! (May 19)
Let's re-elect Dr. Terry McMillan to the House of Representatives. Dr. McMillan is currently the only physician serving in the Legislature and we need knowledgeable input into health-care matters.

Their View: City Hall makes a mess and walks away
Last June, this paper gave front-page coverage to what I call the Brown Farm fiasco, a city-executed, flood-control project gone amok. While it proceeded, the mayor viewed the site, stopped the saws, and saved a few trees. Later, I held or attended meetings to address many site-related problems; at different times, the meetings included, among others, Councilors Connor, Silva, Sorg, and Thomas; Commissioners Garrett and Krahling; and county and city officials and staff. Afterward, nothing happened.

Do Democrats really believe that Republicans hate minorities, the poor, gays, women, and the elderly?
Our View: Poor decision to increase Mesilla taxes
When Mesilla trustees sought approval from voters in March for a temporary property tax increase to support a general obligation bond for needed improvements to public safety facilities, we agreed with that decision and offered our editorial support.
Our View: State must do thorough job in Sunland Park takeover
Chaos. A huge mess. Governmental train wreck. Disgrace. There are a lot of words that could describe what's happening in Sunland Park - none of them positive.
Your View: Letters to the editor (May 19)
Letters to our local papers written in support of Senator Bingaman's bill "Organ Mountain-Desert Peaks National Monument" minimizes the groups and individuals that oppose this proposed massive 600,000-acre land closing from public usage.
Their View: Same-sex marriage: Empathy or right?
There are two ways to defend gay marriage. Argument A is empathy: One is influenced by gay friends in committed relationships yearning for the fulfillment and acceptance that marriage conveys upon heterosexuals. That's essentially the case President Obama made when he first announced his change of views.

Sound Off! (May 18)
I totally disagree with your endorsement of Garcia for Senate District 36. I think it is time for a change.

Your View: Letters to the editor (May 18)
Will there be a time when Republicans speak the truth about an issue? Facts do not enter into any conversation. In the column by Steve Pearce and John Barrasso concerning a comprehensive energy plan, we find another example of not letting reality get in the way of big-money politics.
