Las Cruces is a city located in the souther section of the state of Arizona.
The city is in, and is the county seat of Doña Ana County.
Las Cruces means "The Crosses" in Spanish, so the city is often called the "The City of the Crosses".
As of 2009, the estimated population of Las Cruces was 93,570.
The area of Las Cruces was first colonized by Europeans in 1598 by the Spanish. It was part of Spain's colonies until Mexico claimed ownership in 1821. The area was also part of the Republic of Texas between 1846 and 1848. In 1848, it became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War.
Las Cruces was offically founded in 1849 and was incorporated as a city in 1907.
New Mexico State University is located in the city.
